(anti women witch inquisition)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2263\" data-end=\"2342\">\n<p data-start=\"2265\" data-end=\"2342\">Women could join convents, nurse the sick, or pray silently\u2014but not preach.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2344\" data-end=\"2421\"><strong data-start=\"2344\" data-end=\"2365\">Cultural outcome:<\/strong> Female spirituality = obedience, modesty, and silence.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2428\" data-end=\"2508\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px;\">5 \u00b7 <strong data-start=\"2436\" data-end=\"2506\">Reformation: 1500-1700 A.D. \u2014 Scripture returned, hierarchy stayed<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"2509\" data-end=\"2732\">\n<li data-start=\"2509\" data-end=\"2577\">\n<p data-start=\"2511\" data-end=\"2577\">Luther and Calvin rejected papal power but retained male clergy.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2578\" data-end=\"2666\">\n<p data-start=\"2580\" data-end=\"2666\">Printing gave laymen Bibles; font-size: 20px;\">6 \u00b7 <strong data-start=\"3080\" data-end=\"3137\">Industrial &amp; Victorian Church: 1800s \u2014 Gender spheres<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"3140\" data-end=\"3360\">\n<li data-start=\"3140\" data-end=\"3207\">\n<p data-start=\"3142\" data-end=\"3207\">Men worked in commerce; women relegated to \u201cdomestic holiness.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3208\" data-end=\"3284\">\n<p data-start=\"3210\" data-end=\"3284\">The pulpit became professionalized through seminary training (men only).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3285\" data-end=\"3360\">\n<p data-start=\"3287\" data-end=\"3360\">Women led Sunday-school and mission societies but under male oversight.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"3367\" data-end=\"3427\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">7 \u00b7 <strong data-start=\"3375\" data-end=\"3425\">20th Century: 1900\u20131970 \u2014 Renewal and reaction<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"3428\" data-end=\"3770\">\n<li data-start=\"3428\" data-end=\"3542\">\n<p data-start=\"3430\" data-end=\"3542\"><strong data-start=\"3430\" data-end=\"3465\">Holiness &amp; Pentecostal revivals<\/strong> again empowered women preachers (Aimee Semple McPherson, Catherine Booth).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3543\" data-end=\"3654\">\n<p data-start=\"3545\" data-end=\"3654\">As women gained civic equality, many denominations pushed back, promoting \u201cbiblical manhood and womanhood.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3655\" data-end=\"3770\">\n<p data-start=\"3657\" data-end=\"3770\">The <em data-start=\"3661\" data-end=\"3687\">Shepherding\/Discipleship<\/em> movement (1970s) imported the term <em data-start=\"3723\" data-end=\"3733\">covering<\/em>\u2014each believer under a male leader.
